Iowa’s real-time nitrate water sensor network is in danger of going dark on July 1, but funding is available through the Groundwater Protection Fund. Iowa legislators CAN allocate funding during this legislative session – but we’re going to have to fight hard for it.

Do we need nitrate sensors? Absolutely. Did you know it would only take 32¢ per Iowan each year to restore and expand the system?

Get Prepared for the Call-in Lobby Day: On March 30, John Norris and Dr. Adam Shriver and will share the scientific findings of Central Iowa Source Water Research Assessment (CISWRA) Report, Currents of Change, released this summer. This is the most comprehensive, scientifically based water report ever conducted in the Des Moines and Raccoon River watershed.

Its findings: nearly 80% of the nitrate contamination in those two rivers comes from agricultural sources.

The meeting will present the science behind the findings as well as discuss policies needed to adequately address our water pollution crisis and the politics involved in getting such policies adopted.

A special focus will be on the critical need for restored funding and expansion of the University of Iowa IIHR real-time nitrate water quality sensors. Many rural municipal water systems depend on this system for high nitrate warnings to keep Iowans safe.

The March 30 meeting will prepare you with talking points for our Water Quality Sensor Call-in Lobby Day. We’ll make lobbying easy, and we’ll have time to answer your questions.

Iowa is #2 in the nation for cancer and is the only state with a growing number of cancer cases. Studies link drinking water with high nitrate levels to certain cancers.

This is a public health issue. We deserve to know what’s in our water.

Join us on March 30 to get the info you need then let’s take to the phones on April 1 to advocate for restored water quality monitoring! We are all worth 32¢!
